Townsend Davis is a lawyer and former journalist living in New York City. He was inspired to write Weary Feet, Rested Souls while working as a law clerk on the federal Court of Appeals in Savannah, Georgia in 1991, his first exposure to the Deep South.

Weary Feet was the product of more than 30,000 miles of field research, 100 original interviews and reviews of existing historical and archival material. In addition to writing Weary Feet, he took many of the black and white photographs that appear in the book.

His articles have appeared in The New Republic, Los Angeles Times, Charlotte Observer, Raleigh News & Observer, and Columbia Law Review.
